No other character in the Star Wars universe inspires equal parts intrigue and dread as much as the man dressed in Mandalorian armor. The mysterious bounty hunter Boba Fett has enamored fans since his first appearance in the Empire Strikes Back (Holiday Special notwithstanding) and has become a favorite ever since.
In the prequel film Attack of the Clones, it is revealed that Boba Fett is the clone “son” of legendary bounty hunter Jango Fett. In exchange for using his genetic material to create the clone army of the Republic, Jango demanded a hefty sum and a single clone for himself who would not undergo the accelerated aging of his clone “brother”.
The death of Jango Fett led the young Boba to become hardened and as his career and reputation as an efficient bounty hunter grew – so did his ruthlessness. Boba’s proficiency as a bounty hunter was infamous to both clients and most of all fugitives with a price on their head. One key advantage the merciless bounty hunter had was his unique armor and equipment.
Following the death of Jango Fett the young Boba took control of Jango’s modified Firespray-31 class patrol and attack craft, Slave I. The heavily modified interceptor patrol ship manufactured by Kuat Systems Engineering became feared across the galaxy as Boba Fett’s vessel. The craft would go on to transport a carbonite-frozen Han Solo when he was captured by Fett and Imperial forces at Cloud City.
Perhaps the most iconic character of the bounty hunter is the battered green Mandalorian armor he would adopt as his bounty hunting career continued. The Mandalorian armor was steeped in warrior history. Originating from the planet Mandalore, the armor-inspired fear and awe in all who were so lucky (or unfortunate) to see it in action.
Fett’s armor itself came equipped with multiple lethal and non-lethal solutions for any situation. The armor came equipped with a jetpack unit which the bounty hunter often used to reach a higher vantage point in any situation. The jetpack also allowed Fett to hover above a position – often gaining him the upper hand.
The wrist gauntlets contained a miniaturized flamethrower for crowd control and a whipcord launcher that could nonlethally capture a wanted fugitive. The kneepads each contained rocket dart launchers that were certain to surprise anyone unlucky enough to feel Fett’s wrath. Boba Fett’s green armor was battered and marked by blaster fire while the shoulder pads were adorned with braids he had collected from defeated foes.
Early in his bounty hunting career, Fett used a pair of twin blasters similar to the ones his father Jango had. Over the course of time, he would adopt BlasTech Industries EE-3 carbine rifle. The EE-3 was a three-round burst at long range and Fett used it with lethal efficiency.
Boba Fett’s success as a bounty hunter can be attributed to a variety of reasons. His clone heritage, training under his father Jango Fett, and his equipment all coalesced to make one of the deadliest bounty hunters in the history of the galaxy.
